Asphalt Milling

Asphalt milling involves the removal of the top layer of an existing asphalt surface to create a smooth and even base for subsequent re-paving.

During the milling process, a milling machine is used to grind and remove the damaged asphalt pavement to a predetermined depth from a few inches to full-depth. The milling depth will vary depending on the extent of the damage to the existing surface. The milling machine grinds the asphalt surface, effectively breaking it into small pieces and removing the damaged layer. These pieces, known as millings or reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), can then collected for recycling or reuse in new asphalt mixtures.

Asphalt milling is commonly used when the existing pavement exhibits signs of distress, such as cracking, raveling, potholes, or unevenness. By removing the damaged layer, milling allows for the elimination of surface irregularities and provides a fresh base for subsequent pavement applications. Milling helps restore the structural integrity and smoothness of any road, driveway, or parking lot, enhancing safety and prolonging the lifespan of the asphalt.

Following milling, a new layer of asphalt can be applied as an overlay, completing the resurfacing process.
